5 things to check on your credit report
To see your credit report for free with NerdWallet, click here: https://www.nerdwallet.com/blog/free-credit-report/ Three major credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian and TransUnion — track your financial data and turn it into credit reports. Those credit reports are then used in calculating your credit scores, so it’s good to know what’s on them. You can get a free copy from each bureau every 12 months from AnnualCreditReport.com. It’s also wise to check things more frequently than that. With NerdWallet, you can access your TransUnion credit report for free whenever you like, and we update it weekly. When you get a report, you’ll want to check these categories of info for accuracy: 1) Personal info: • Names you’ve used • Addresses you’ve lived at • Birthdate • Social Security number 2) Open accounts: • Creditor name • Account number • Credit limit • Your payment history 3) Closed accounts: • Creditor name • Who closed the account • Your payment history, including any late payments 4) Negative information, if any: • Judgments • Collections • Bankruptcies and liens 5) Inquiries on your credit: • You applied for credit • You checked your own credit • A creditor checked you out You can dispute errors on your credit reports with the bureau reporting them. It’s smart to get errors removed — they could lead to lower credit scores, which in turn may limit your access to credit or cause you to pay higher interest rates.
